Christmas in Hong Kong

This is my second Christmas in Hong Kong but without my family being here. The night before Christmas was really cold, we decided to go off campus to Tsim Sha Tsui after the gift exchange session with our seniors. Celebrating Christmas in Hong Kong is not a bad idea, I really love the spectacular night scene in Hong Kong!

Beautiful Christmas decorations at The Peninsula, Tsim Sha Tsui.
The building itself is already luxurious. 'WOW'!
I have never been so relaxing after I came to Hong Kong,
We ended up chilling in an Australian Bar that night, I drank my soft drink, they drank their wine.
Sharing the great moments together, throwing back how we had been in the past four months, recounting what God has done for me this year.

This Christmas is simple yet great.

More Responsibilities Shouldered

New batch of MAHK Student Chapter Committee is going to be born! Two of my HKUST friends and I were selected as the student representatives of my university in Hong Kong, glad to be part of it, a platform where we could just put our efforts without the care of 'politics', no situations like the political fights in clubs or societies would happen. I had never thought of having the chance to contribute something to the Malaysian community here in this way. I'm excited for the upcoming activities! Looking forward to our teamwork!

Bread Run

My very first community service in Hong Kong!
I was glad to see that a lot of students volunteer themselves to participate in this activity for the community. I have joined HKUST Connect as a participant, it's a student community service team, like Brean Run, it's one of the community services organized by them. In Bread Run, our job is to pick up breads which had been ordered in advance from the bakeries and then bring them to the storage in Yau Tong, the breads will eventually be redistributed to the needy. As there were last minute volunteer withdrawals, my partner and I agreed to pick up breads at one more store. We received three big bags of breads in total, two person brought them all the way to Yau Tong from Causeway Bay. Imagine that if we don't pick up those remaining breads, how many breads were going to be thrown away?

The breads will end up at elsewhere instead if we don't collect them from the bakeries. We are also encouraged to donate can foods for those who need.

I didn't do much community services when I was young, this is surely a great experience!
I really love doing community services, I'll continue to serve the community in the future, more to go! :D

Got 4A's 1B in my midterm, work hard for my final!

有梦想真的很美好

无意间在youtube播起了Brain的original sound track,
Brain

Never Underestimate the Power of Prayer

So you can see the time, it's already the next day! At the moment, I feel blessed, I feel rest assured, I again experienced that our God is so real, He answered my prayer immediately, just right after I had committed my worries to Him.

We can't anticipate what will happen next, the things happened might be good or bad. In these two weeks, I have to say that problems keep coming overwhelmingly one by one, I sometimes struggled to tackle them but all of them went well eventually. Problems or shortcomings can be due to our own impertinence, I have learnt some important lessons throughout the process.

I lost my umbrella two weeks before in the lecture hall, it was stolen and God gave me another umbrella which I realized at the end; I lost my student ID card the day before yesterday, it was found in front of my hall, I found it just right after I prayed; I lost the books which I borrowed from the library yesterday, I was really frustrated and I felt hopeless that time, but I found the books in the laundry room, just right after I prayed.

My laptop went blank and its operating system corrupted JUST NOW, I kept restarting and shutting down my laptop, trying to find solutions on web by using my phone but the wireless connection had some issues occurring at the same time, I felt like throwing the laptop down from my dorm, I felt like I couldn't do anything, but my laptop works well after I prayed.

All of these might seem to you that they are not serious problems or they are not bothering issues, but the happenings of all of these gave me a totally new perspective and reflection on my faith, as what my best friend told me before - it's the matter of how much faith I put in, pray and commit my worries to Him, trust Him and have faith in Him. I'm thankful for what He has done for me, I'm sure that He is leading me the way, I feel secured following His path.

Lord is my Shepherd.

MAHK Orientation

We are basically the first batch of MAHK (Malaysian Association of Hong Kong) student chapter freshmen which are affiliated to the MAHK chapter. We just had our orientation last Saturday, I met a lot of new Malaysian friends from different universities in Hong Kong. I probably knew that I was the only one who wore purple shirt that day. My HKUST friends who are somehow funny and playful kept promoting me to others as a future president of the country. Failing to stop them from doing so, I received a lot of heartwarming handshakes and encouragements from other Malaysian friends but hey, I just aspire to be a political analyst. They brought a lot of fun to me and to others as well that night, it was really a great gathering although the food wasn't that nice at all. We had city hunt in the afternoon, rushing from one place to another, singing the national anthem in front of the crowd in Mongkok (we somehow sang this confidently), bullying our jo-ba and jo-ma, bbq-ing in Yuen Long, we had fun that day. Glad to have great friends in Hong Kong, thanks God for giving me all of these, He is a promising God.

How I have been here

Dad had already gone back to Malaysia, I'm really grateful for having great parents and friends, it's really a blessing from God. Two weeks have just passed, I have already got used to the life here, I'm glad to have awesome seniors who keep assisting us in any means which indirectly makes us not to feel being isolated in this Cantonese speaking country. The living pace here is fast and everyone keep rushing all the time. We can hardly have a slow walk in the busier areas of Hong Kong like Wan Chai or Causeway Bay, but we still can enjoy the spectacular sea view everyday in the university. I can't get enough of just seeing the scenic view from my dorm, blue sky, blue sea, green mountains and fields, white clouds, tiny yachts and so on. This beautiful campus makes everyone here feels refreshing and brightening to start doing daily routines.

The fall term has just commenced, the academic concourse is always crowded with people during the peak hours. I keep rushing from one place to another, my academic timetable is tight, some courses do only have 10 minutes in between. Hectic studying life is typical in this Asian university, I even have my meal when I'm rushing to lecture hall sometimes. The course enrollment system here is not really good, it is really bothering and inconvenient, this mostly happens to all of the freshmen, I sincerely hope the university will solve this issue as soon as possible. And finally, none of my enrolled courses are in the waiting list.

I have dropped my year two mathematics course, taking basic calculus course as suggested by my program advisor. My program advisor is a mathematics professor, he eventually found out that I don't have a competently strong background in mathematics (he said UEC mathematics students have the common problem) when being compared to other students especially the students from mainland China. He also said that my curriculum is better not to do credit transfer as I have enough time to complete all of my major requirements so I withdrew my credit transfer which has already been granted for year one mathematics course. I would still work harder in order to get admitted to pursue my intended major. Now, I can have more time to complete my healthy lifestyle course and to do my common core coursework.

I have been studying in library these few days and I feel glad to be here. I really want to highlight the library here, it's really superb! A high-tech library with nice sea view! It's really convenient to use every provided facility here, I was really impressed when I was having the library tour with my friends. I guess I'll spend most of my studying time in the library, a really relaxing and comfortable place to study and revise. There are specifically designed areas for both group study and individual study, there is an outdoor library area too for students to study. I really feel honoured to have this privilege to study here.

Besides that, the sports facility here is good too. I haven't tried the swimming pool yet, my friends told me it's really a good one that we should not miss to use it. I have been playing squash with my Malaysian friends these few days, I start to love playing this sport! The good thing of studying at HKUST is that we should also complete healthy lifestyle courses in order to graduate. At the mean time we work hard for academic studies, we are all ensured to have enough exercises and sports here to secure a healthier studying life. Squash is fun, I usually play squash with my friends here, I'm gonna be stronger and fitter. We do also have gymnasium here and other great sports amenities like archery, field track and more.

There are a lot of things I want to share with you but it's hard for me to put them into words, especially the experiences I went through these few weeks, both good and bad will shape me into a stronger better person. There is still a long way to go, my university life will be a really exciting one, all of these are the blessings coming from God.

First Day in HK

Yes, I'm now officially a HKUST undergraduate student.
The weather here is a bit overcast, every scenery looks hazy which is owing to the happening of cyclone in Taiwan. Even so, the night scene at HKUST is still superb, the weather is no longer hazy at night. Looking forward to joining my upcoming orientation activities, starts getting more and more excited. I should say I did feel like getting lost but I guess I'll get used to the life here soon. Today is not that hectic, I just did my hall check-in procedure and moved into my room, that's all for today's to-do-list. Thanks God, everything seems going well and I haven't encountered with any bothering problems. I have met a lot of new friends today and basically most of them are Malaysians haha. I'm really surprised that I can speak quite fluently in English so I think it'll not be a problem for me to be a political strategist or even politician in the future. So, tomorrow might be a busy day, program registration and course registration to be done. I'm gonna off now to have a good rest. Have a great day ahead guys, I'm fine here! :)

Staying up late is one of the obvious habits the students here have,
I still can see students walking around here even at midnight.

Chances are always there

Few weeks ago, to my surprise, I received a personal invitation from DAP to attend a dinner & dialogue with the political leaders and other internship applicants would be going as well. At the moment I saw the invitation, I probably knew that I couldn't go. The reason for not going given by my parents wasn't really convincing, my zeal was turned down and I should say I felt unhappy for some instant.

It is surely a great opportunity, not every people has the privilege to attend this kind of activities or meetings. I personally wish to ensure whether politics is the right field I'll be getting myself involved in, so that's why I really wish to join it. I told myself this is not the only way I can do to affirm my future path, many great things might have fled if I grasp it firmly without thinking.

Some of my major plans were disrupted and you know the feeling of missing up good opportunities, it can eventually kill one’s motivations. I immediately put myself in a positive point of view and such negative thoughts went away completely. Joel Osteen said, "You haven't missed too many opportunities. You haven't made too many mistakes. Begin again. Get your fire back. Get your passion back." Greater and worthier opportunities will come in favourable time, the loss of opportunity will soon become negligible, I believe that some of them are just being temporized.

Sometimes, it's somehow hard to understand God's plan during the course of happenings.
Chances are always there, it depends on how I embrace them in the perspective of God.

The invitation

15 days more.

I'll be back

The insights I've gained these days

More than one month to go until the day I leave for Hong Kong to pursue my tertiary studies, I have too much free time recently as my internship has been deferred to next year. Free time overloaded but it should be a kind of perception as time is always insufficient for us. I have been using most of my recent time browsing politics-related articles and watching the live broadcast of parliamentary meetings these few weeks. I finally know what's going on and how those meetings are being presided. It's surprisingly an eye-opener for me, I totally change my previous perspective on our country's parliament.

Through viewing the videos, I manage to see how the MPs present their speeches and the way they get themselves involved in the debate. Although I ain't good in Malay, I still can partially understand the messages which the MPs want to deliver. I'm really impressed with some of the thoughts and ideas proposed by the PR opposition leaders, they do really care about our country's future and they don't forsake it. Nurul Izzah Anwar is one of the very good examples of political leaders who humble themselves and do their very best to raise positive concerns on the problems our country has today. The honourable and wise ones learn from mistakes and pitfalls in the course of duty instead of renouncing.

I have a great example here to share with you. We know that the Penang State Government had recently made a mistake to omit the question-and-answer session which led to a wave of accusation from the national front. Lim Guan Eng did the right expected thing by apologizing for the issue and he did it unreservedly without trying to make excuses. In fact, he acknowledged that ultimately, he as chief minister was responsible for the error. By the same token, the opposition leader Jahara Hamid is equally to be admired and appreciated. She immediately accepted the apology and moved on with the business of the assembly rather than making the usual noises about the mistake, offering also certain suggestions which would certainly make the assembly sessions more effective and meaningful. This is the true reflection of what John F. Kennedy had said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” I hope that this kind of responses from both sides will be emulated in Parliament and other state assemblies.

However, in Parliament, there are still quite a lot of ignorant leaders sitting therein, I have heard some ridiculous statements and allegations which totally seem nonsensical, utterly baseless accusation with unbelievably poor quality research like DSAI's millions in a certain bank, even unparliamentary language like "binatang" and "you shut up" came up in the parliamentary debate. I wonder how our elder opposition leaders went through the dilemmas in the past when there were not much opposition MPs, they are undoubtedly worthy to have our salutes, hats off to them. They have gone through the hardship, but the battle for democracy hasn't ended.

Meanwhile, I realize that the happenings of false accusations and crimes are getting more common here, the situation is worsening, injustices happened one after another, these sometimes make me wonder if 'home' is really worth going back to after I have gained my own professions in the future. In addition to my parents, my political exemplars are also one of the reasons why I choose to be back, they have never failed to inspire me, my eyes are opened to a wide array of hope and the passion that Malaysians do care. This 'home' is my homeland, I wish to contribute my efforts to help transform her into a better one.

Politics might be or might not be the field I'll step into, I had never thought of having an interest in politics before, but it's unlucky to say that I have it now. I don't know if this is a good sign as most of the parents will be strongly opposed to see their children stepping into politics. Many would say it’s a bad thing, a filthy field filled with greedy ambitious people that only cares for themselves and a person's innocence will be gradually ruined in the ongoing process. They believe that it is ugly; politics is dirty. I yet believe the right is still there, it's like the light that over-shines the darkness, because beauty infinitely outweighs the ugly - I feel hopeful.

I'll put this unique ambition aside first and embrace what I should have in this present. Looking forward to my university life, it'll shape me into a more exceptional and competent person. I'll work hard for my future in the subsequent years of study, so as to get myself prepared well and let God makes use of me. I'll be back here, my beloved country, worth coming back to I'm convinced.

Leader-to-be?

In a coincidence, I saw a post in Facebook featuring about a youth internship program. A strong feeling emerged in my heart and it lasts long until today. I’m part of the growing community realizing that there is something seriously wrong with our country. The sense of justice and equity eventually made me applied to the party in charge for the program. I'm one of the very lucky who successfully get admitted to this program, I’m also one of the few unlucky enough to have an interest in politics.

I would say, it’ll definitely be a fruitful experience for a freshman-to-be like me, being an intern to work with my chosen leader, it's a unique opportunity to get myself involved in political field, I'll have the chance to gain first-hand experience and the insights of being a national leader. Those opposition leaders are always my great exemplars, I truly admire their personalities especially their efforts towards transforming the country. It's conceivable that there are not much good political leaders around here. Thus, I really appreciate their selfless dedications to serving the public and nation.

I want to be like them, being the thrust of change to make our beloved country better and so as to fulfill my responsibilities of being a Malaysian. Personally, I have always aspired to serve the nation with my professions and thereby influence the people around me with my good testimony. Despite that, I don’t dare to dream of being an influential leader in my future or being a political leader like my exemplars at this point, for the reason that my personality doesn't make myself suitable to be a leader, ‘introvert’ will be a better word to describe me. But what if God wants me to be a leader?

So I ask myself, “Leader-to-be, or not?”
At this moment, I’m still pondering,

“Am I a future leader?”

I almost forsook my homeland before but now I don't.
I want to speak for justice and equity,
I want to make a positive impact on my nation.
Dream big and Be the influential one.

What's your perception?

Perceptions can be deceiving. We must ask smart questions about the program and the area of study.

Path to Democracy

GE13,
It has been the dirtiest general election in history.
Blatant gerrymandering, voting fraud and so on,
It is way too outrageous and dirtier than what we can imagine.
I stayed up late that night and so did others, we kept our eyes on the news and statistics promulgated by EC or whatever sources on the web. Having the same goal, we yearn to change our recent government. But the results announced were what we had expected, the national front swept most of the rural areas' parliamentary seats.

I am really disappointed with the outcomes, especially the one in my living state which is actually due to gerrymandering. We are furious at what the national front had done, sense of justice keeps growing which indirectly makes my aspiration of being a forensic scientist stronger. But what was encouraging is that PR coalition had successfully won majority of the parliamentary seats in urban areas, albeit unfair in demarcation of constituencies.

Although we couldn't overthrow the so-called dictatorial government that day, we are now one step closer to democracy. So, I would say, KEEP GOING, we should save democracy from being on the verge of dying. We are already halfway there!

Keep on striving,
DOn't quIT.

We all hope for a better nation.
May God bless our beloved country.

Pray for our nation.

I believe

Screening through the articles about the achievements of A-levels students and university professors, I can conclude that even you're a top scorer in your region, there are still a lot of people who are more exceptional and outstanding than you, so we have to learn to be humble in any circumstances.

A little bit sadness emerges, I really wish to be one of the students, holding passes to study in the world-renowned prestigious universities, they're really great, it seems nearly impossible to me. I work quite hard for my future studies and so it still remains as an unreachable dream. Frankly speaking, if I were given a chance, I would choose to take A-levels instead of UEC. Being delegate of my beloved country for IPhO & IChO has always been my target since I was young. But now, I have no chance to go for that. I blame God sometimes, Why I weren't as smart as others, Why I can't, many whys appeared in my mind.

In one of the church services, God replied all of my whys through a sermon given by my church pastor. During the sermon, I suddenly understood everything I asked. I should move forward, bigger challenges are still waiting for me, I shouldn't be defeated by this kind of small matters, opportunities and chances are always there.

Although I can't get into the world most prestigious universities, I thank God for putting me in a top university in Asia, which was actually my first preference at the beginning. I have already decided to follow His plan, let Him makes use of me, shapes me to become a good man with good testimony.

I believe, His plans always come in time, do you agree with me? :)
